Hughes Emergency Response Team Emerge Triumphant At Rea 2014 Awards

The event was held in London’s Savoy hotel on Thursday 12th June. The company scooped the prestigious Skills Development award in recognition of its efforts in pioneering new offshore emergency response techniques. Hughes SSE has been operating Emergency Response Teams (ERTs) and offshore support across its wind farm projects to provide 24 hour medical and emergency response cover with highly rapid response times as part of their role for providing O&M services for ad-hoc tasks.

The ERT service as part of the Hughes Offshore Support teams has been provided by Hughes SSE since 2012, when the company identified the area of offshore emergency response as one in which significant improvements could be made. To begin addressing the perceived issues in the field, Hughes SSE began to provide three man teams fully qualified in roped-access, confined space and advanced first aid operations – these teams are deployed in the field on rotating shifts to ensure full cover at a moment’s notice. The ERTs facilitate rapid emergency response and are highly mobile on the site, with an average response time of less than 30 minutes for any incident. In addition, the ERTs have been involved in delivering on-site training to other sub-contractors, sharing skills and knowledge that have the potential to save lives in an emergency as part of their daily routine of operations and maintenance infield.

Hughes SSE were delighted to receive the award, and managing director Ian Hughes passed comment on the win:

“We are extremely happy to be recognised by an industry leading body such as the REA. It is our belief that in emergencies, the industry standard ‘golden hour’ should be used as effectively as possible. As a result we are committed to provide rapid response within 30 minutes of any incident. We take great pride in this service and will continue to develop and improve the ERT as the company move forward”.

Mr Hughes also expressed his thanks to the ERT crews, head office staff and client support, who continue to work diligently to secure the efficiency and logistics of the operation.
